Before You Install

To ensure a successful SMTX OS deployment, you should understand how to configure networks in the SMTX OS cluster and download installation packages and files on the SmartX official website.

Understand SMTX OS Networking

To understand how to configure networks in SMTX OS, you need to first understand how networking works in SMTX OS.

SMTX OS implements the virtual distributed switch (VDS) based on a set of physically connected ports, ensuring network connectivity between hosts and therefore streamlining the handling of various types of system and service traffic.

In SMTX OS, there are three types of virtual networks created through VDS: storage network, management network, and virtual machine network. Each network communicates using the network port associated with the VDS.

  • Management Network: It is used for managing the cluster and typically has a bandwidth of 1Gbps.

  • Storage Network: It is used for data exchange between nodes in the cluster and can only be used in the cluster with a bandwidth of 10Gbps or higher.

  • Virtual Machine Network: It is used for the network of virtual machines, and the user determines its bandwidth according to workloads.

    Note:

If needed, you can specify a network to serve as both the management network and the virtual machine network.

Configure SMTX OS Networks

Each node in the SMTX OS cluster requires at least two IPs: the IP of the management network and the IP of the storage network. If you want to manage the hardware of the nodes via CloudTower, you need to reserve IPs of IPMI in each node.

Refer to requirements for SMTX OS networking below.

Node NetworkIP AddressSubnet MaskGatewayVLAN ID (Optional)
Node 1Management Networkxx.xx.xx.xxxx.xx.xx.xxxx.xx.xx.xxxx
Storage Networkxx.xx.xx.xxxx.xx.xx.xx--
..................

Follow the rules below when assigning the IP of each node.

  • The IP of the management network and the IP of the storage network cannot be assigned to the same network segment.
  • The IPs of the storage network between nodes can access each other.
  • The IPs of the management network between nodes can access each other.

Download Installation Files

Download the SMTX OS Community Edition installation package on the SmartX official website, including ISO image, CloudTower tar.gz installation files, and Everoute tar.gz installation files.

A web browser is also required to install and deploy SMTX OS, and it's recommended that you use Google Chrome and enable Cookies and JavaScript on the browser.
