Traditional Hospital IT Architecture Faces Multiple Pain Points in the New Era
The Third Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University began its informatization journey early, launching hospital-wide outpatient and inpatient Electronic Medical Records (EMR) as early as 2008. In 2016, the hospital formulated its "13th Five-Year Plan" for informatization, aiming to establish an information integration platform and a clinical data center through top-level design. Specific tasks included further improving the "Rouji Network Hospital" established in 2016 and meeting assessment requirements such as EMR Level 5 and Hospital Smart Service Level 3. Facing this series of new tasks, continued reliance on original blade servers and physical machines would lead to issues including limited data center space, difficulties in flexible expansion, high investment costs, and heavy operation and maintenance pressure.
Researching SmartX ECP and Recognizing Its Ability to Meet Long-term Development Needs
After researching various new technologies, The Third Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University recognized that SmartX ECP offers superior features compared to traditional architecture, such as rapid deployment, ease of operation and maintenance, and no risk of single points of failure. Considering future upgrade requirements, SmartX ECP eliminates the need for complex migration, whereas traditional servers involve heavy workloads for migrating databases and systems. Based on these factors, the hospital conducted selection comparisons and POC testing of HCI vendors. SmartX stood out as its hyperconverged platform features independent and controllable source code based on technology, ensuring reliability and hardware decoupling. Furthermore, the hospital can communicate directly with SmartX R&D engineers when issues arise. Ultimately, the hospital chose to partner with SmartX.
Hosting Core Business Systems Including EMR and PACS Through Five Rounds of Expansion
Since 2018, The Third Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University has introduced SMTX OS , building heterogeneous HCI clusters based on various server brands. Following five rounds of expansion, the platform now progressively hosts business systems for the existing campus, including EMR (Oracle + DG), PACS (SQL Server), integration platforms, and anesthesia systems, as well as EMR and HIS middleware and other comprehensive business systems for the new campus.
"After implementing the SmartX ECP, in addition to savings in data center space and energy costs, as well as the convenience of daily maintenance, what impressed us most was the ability to achieve rapid deployment of system applications, along with robust reliability and scalability."
Hosting New Campus Business Systems with SmartX ELF to Reduce Reliance on VMware Virtualization
In the initial stage of construction, The Third Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University selected a SmartX ECP solution based on VMware virtualization to support business systems such as PACS in the existing campus. After years of stable operation, the user verified the replacement capabilities of SmartX ECP in a production environment. Consequently, during the construction of the new campus, the hospital chose to use SmartX native virtualization, ELF, to build new clusters for hosting business systems such as ERP and HIS middleware, achieving a seamless transition from VMware to SmartX native virtualization.
